Becoming a U.S. citizen offers a wealth of benefits that can improve your quality of life and provide long-term security. Whether you’re considering citizenship in order to further integrate into American society, or to enhance your professional and personal opportunities, understanding the advantages and the application process is key.

Reasons to Get U.S. Citizenship

Unlike Permanent Residence status, citizenship does not expire, eliminating the need to renew your status, and giving you the right to vote, travel with a U.S. passport and other benefits.

  1. Permanent Residence vs. Citizenship While permanent residents (green card holders) enjoy the privilege of living and working in the U.S. indefinitely, they do not have the full rights and responsibilities of U.S. citizens. U.S. citizenship grants you the right to vote in federal, state, and local elections, the ability to run for public office, and protection from deportation. Permanent residents, on the other hand, can face challenges such as being unable to vote or participate in certain governmental processes.
  2. Security and Stability U.S. citizenship provides a higher level of security and stability. Citizens cannot be deported (except in extreme circumstances), whereas permanent residents can face removal from the country if they violate immigration laws. Additionally, U.S. citizens have the right to apply for federal benefits, including social security, unemployment insurance, and healthcare programs, providing long-term financial security.
  3. Additional Rights and Responsibilities U.S. citizens have additional rights, including the ability to apply for a U.S. passport, which enables easy travel in and out of the country. Citizens can also sponsor relatives to come to the U.S. and apply for citizenship themselves. Furthermore, U.S. citizenship brings the responsibility of participating in civic duties such as voting and adhering to U.S. laws, which strengthens the overall democratic system.

Who Is Eligible for U.S. Citizenship?

To apply for U.S. citizenship, you generally must meet the following requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years old at the time of application
  • Demonstrate that you have been a lawfully admitted permanent resident (Green Card holder) of the United States for at least 5 years
  • Demonstrate continuous residence in the United States for at least 5 years immediately before your filing date
  • You must demonstrate good moral character and attachment to the principles and ideals of the U.S. Constitution
  • Be able to read, write, and speak basic English
  • Have knowledge of the fundamentals of U.S. history and government
  • Be willing to take an Oath of Allegiance to the United States

To start the application process, you must be living in the U.S. for at least 4 years and 9 months. However, if you are married to a U.S. citizen, you can begin the process after 2 years and 9 months of residency.

What the Citizenship Process Looks Like

The process of obtaining U.S. citizenship involves several steps:

  1. Application (Form N-400): The first step is to complete the N-400 form
  2. Biometric Appointment: After filing your application, you’ll be scheduled for a biometric appointment, where your fingerprints will be taken for background checks.
  3. Interview: Next, you will attend an interview with a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) officer who will review your application and test your knowledge of English, reading, writing and U.S. civics.
  4. Oath of Allegiance: If your application is approved, you will be scheduled for a naturalization ceremony where you will take the Oath of Allegiance to the United States.
